Taking a supply down the garden

A supply to an outbuilding is a proper circuit rather than an extension lead made permanent. It runs from the board, out of the house, down the garden either buried at a sensible depth or clipped along a boundary, and terminates in its own small arrangement at the far end so the building can be isolated and so its circuits are separated.

The thing to settle first is what will actually be used out there, because the cable is sized for the answer and it is expensive to revisit. A shed with a light and a socket is a very different load from a garden office with a heater, a kettle and three monitors, and that is a different load again from a workshop with machinery or a hot tub. People routinely under-describe this at the quote and regret it two years later.

On this peninsula the weather is the other half of the job. Salt laden wind corrodes enclosures, glands and terminals, and driven rain finds any entry that is not sealed and oriented properly. External fittings want choosing for the exposure of the actual position, and the coastal towns are a genuinely different specification from the sheltered inland ones. Often asked about alongside fault finding, smoke and heat alarms and electric showers.

What will really be used out there

The cable is sized for the honest answer, and revisiting it later is expensive. Over-describe rather than under-describe.

The route and the depth

Buried at a sensible depth or clipped along a boundary, and routed so nobody puts a spade through it later.

Fittings for the position

A coastal elevation is a different specification from a sheltered inland one. Standard fittings corrode.

What this job looks like

The slots below are placeholders. The pictures elsewhere on this site are example images of the kind of work described and they are not photographs of our own jobs. Nothing here is borrowed from anybody else's. Our own photographs go in as jobs are finished and customers are happy for us to use them.

Why people use us

Done once, properly

A garden supply is dug in and then covered up, so it is the classic example of work it is worth doing right the first time.

  • The intended load established before the cable is sized
  • Route and depth agreed and recorded so it can be found again
  • Its own isolation at the building, not a spur off a socket
  • Fittings chosen for the actual exposure of the position

Frequently asked questions

Outdoor and garden electrics: the questions people ask

The ones that come up most. If yours is not here, ring and ask.

Can I just run an extension lead to my shed?

For a lawnmower on a dry afternoon, people do. As a permanent arrangement it is the wrong answer: it is not protected, not isolated and not weatherproof at the joins. A proper supply is a circuit with its own arrangement at the far end.

How deep does the cable have to be buried?

Deep enough that normal garden activity cannot reach it, and marked so somebody digging later knows. The exact depth depends on the cable type and what is above it, and the route is recorded so it can be found.

Can I have power for a hot tub?

It is a significant continuous load and it is a dedicated circuit rather than a socket. The question is the same as for any outbuilding: what the supply and the board can carry, and the distance.

Why do my outside lights keep failing near the coast?

Usually corrosion and water ingress rather than a faulty fitting. Salt works into glands, screws and terminals. Fittings chosen for a coastal position last considerably longer than standard ones.

About Wirral Electrics

Wirral Electrics is not taking bookings yet. The pages here are finished and the information on them is accurate, and the brand will start taking work when the labour behind it is in place. What that means, and what this site deliberately does not claim.

Get in touch

Tell us what the job is and roughly how old the house is. A photograph of the consumer unit and of the inside of a socket front answers more than any description.
