Car chargers
Car charger installation on the Wirral
A charger at home. Three things decide the work: what the supply can carry, whether the board has a spare way, and how far it is to where the car actually stands.
- We look before we price
- In writing, itemised
- We say what is not ours
Car charger installation
The three questions, in the order they matter
The first is the supply. A charger is a continuous load for hours at a time, which is unlike almost anything else in a house, and what your incoming supply can carry alongside everything else is the thing that decides whether a straightforward installation is possible. On most houses it is. Where it is not, the supply itself is the network operator's to alter, not ours, and that introduces a third party and a timescale.
The second is the board. A charger needs its own circuit, which needs a spare way and the right protection. Plenty of older boards have neither, which is why a charger enquiry frequently becomes a conversation about the consumer unit. That is not an upsell, it is the order the work has to happen in.
The third is the route, and it is the one people underestimate. The distance from the board to where the car parks decides the cable, and on a large plot or where parking is at the far side of the house that can be a substantial run. Whether it goes through a wall, along a soffit, under a drive or round the building decides the labour. Measuring that before pricing is the difference between a quote and a guess. Often asked about alongside outdoor and garden electrics, fault finding and smoke and heat alarms.
Talk about a chargerA charger draws for hours. Where the supply cannot take it, altering it is the network operator's work and their timescale.
A charger needs its own circuit. Older boards often have nowhere to put it, which makes the board part of the job.
The run from board to parking position is the biggest variable in the labour, and it is measured rather than estimated.
Done across Bebington, Bromborough, Heswall, and everywhere else on the peninsula.

Frequently asked questions
Car charger installation: the questions people ask
The ones that come up most. If yours is not here, ring and ask.
Can I have a charger if I park on the street?
Charging across a public footway is not something a homeowner can simply arrange, because it involves the highway. Off street parking is the straightforward case. If you park on the street it is worth asking the council what, if anything, is possible where you live.
Does my fuse board need changing first?
Sometimes. A charger needs its own circuit with a spare way and the right protection, and older boards frequently have neither. It is established at the first visit rather than discovered on the day.
How far can the charger be from the house?
A long way, and distance is the main cost variable. A longer run needs more cable, more labour and sometimes a larger cable to deal with the drop over the distance. It is measured before it is priced.
Which charger should I buy?
That is worth deciding after somebody has looked at the supply, because what your installation can support narrows the sensible options. Buying the unit first and then finding out is the wrong way round.

Where the car stands, where the board is, and roughly how far apart they are is the whole first conversation.
About Wirral Electrics
Wirral Electrics is not taking bookings yet. The pages here are finished and the information on them is accurate, and the brand will start taking work when the labour behind it is in place. What that means, and what this site deliberately does not claim.
